Basic overview of energy and human life (See a...

So many different view points, advisories, and lists of what to do for the new year and decade have bombarded my email and RSS feeds over the past several days.  It’s expected and for the good or bad of it, I generally superficially scan most, choose not to pass on, and drop into the deleted folder.

The following came to me, ultimately by accident I believe, but caught my eye to read through.  Lists are great that way, just doesn’t seem that long or as much work to get through.

Anyways, I like this nearly top to bottom and hope that you enjoy it as well.

Health:
1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.
3. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured (processed)
4. Live with the 3 E’s — Energy, Enthusiasm and Empathy
5. Make time to pray.
6. Play more games
7. Read more books than you did in 2009 .
8. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day
9. Sleep for 7 hours.
10.Take a 10-30 minutes walk daily. And while you walk, smile.

Personality:
11. Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
12. Don’t have negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive

Scheduling Group Training

January 1st, 2010

One of the cool things with having multiple health & fitness programs within our larger company is that we have several opportunities to check out other related companies for potential partnerships. One thing I like to do in order to get to know those companies and or their personality is to visit their blog.

Promotional content tends to get more conversational in a Blog.

I’m just starting to check out MyClassPro now and while jumping into their blog I found an interesting video quiz that might be fun for those who travel through the Diet Grader site.

I’m not so certain that the quiz result is the “perfect” way to start each day, but of the choices it seems to be making sense.

After further review and discussions to ideally bring some added benefit to our membership in the Fitness Pro Travel Network, I look forward to providing further opinions on how this program may assist you as a Fitness Professional.

You can begin your own research now by following the links above.  Pete and Kelly were both pleasant to talk with and would be happy to ensure you get set up with a free trial.

Scheduling group trainings can be a pain. MyClassPro is  primarily geared to the Fit Pro who independently provides community fitness camps and is designed to make scheduling, payment, and communication simple. But, it can be used for other group training scheduling functions appropriate to the yoga instructor, group fitness instructor, or even certain club settings as well.

Give me a couple weeks and I’ll see if we can dig up a bit more and if appropriate secure specific benefits for the FPT community members…. If you’ve used it or have specific questions you’d like me to check into be sure to post them to this blog entry.

Are You A Rude Airline Traveler?

December 17th, 2009

I’m certain we all have it in our mind that we must represent Fit Bodies, ourselves, and our profession well while providing an exchange for services with a working vacation.  Do you have this same thing in mind during the travel portion of your trip?

This topic is not coming up because of issues with any of the Fit Pro Travelers.  It happens to be on my mind because I caught a radio interview with a Travelocity representative this morning.  They spent some time talking through a 2009 traveler rudeness report, which I think we might all find rather interesting.

1600 travelers took part in the rudeness survey.

Here is a the take from the Hipster Travel Guide: Overall, people hate sitting next to smelly passengers (No. 1 answer at 40 percent) and people with the Swine Flu or at least exhibiting coughing, sneezing and hacking, 30 percent.)

Getting Creative With Your Blog

December 7th, 2009
Writer's Market
Image via Wikipedia

I manage a few different blogs, and I am no where near a professional writer or creative with the pen (keyboard).  That being the case I often find getting creative with my blog somewhat difficult.

Because of my above mentioned handicap it would be most easy to simply dump the blog idea altogether. But, I’m told that would be the wrong move by every internet marketer alive.  I also find the specific blogs a simple location to address specific ideas, changes, or issues with our various fitness industry programs.

So, being the resourceful guy I am… oops, that’s a different story.  Today I was fortunate to take a look at one of my RSS feeds at just the right time on small business that happened to give a mention to a company with a cool blogging content assistance program.

I was quickly on my way to check out Zemanta.

No affiliate relationship or commission here.  I was just so impressed with some of the features in this tool, which I could easily add as a FireFox add-on, that I want to mention it to the Fit Pros who keep track of things we have going on…. This also makes great worthwhile content for me in making a blog post.  :-)     I’m using it on this post and tried it first at our nutrition solution blog site.

Zemanta is a tool that looks over your shoulder while you blog and gives you tips and advice, suggests related content and pictures and makes sure your posts get promoted as they deserve to be…

Fitness Education Presenter

November 9th, 2009

There are several motivators that may drive a fitness professional to consider becoming a fitness education presenter. They are similar to the motivators for an individual to run this track in most any industry.

For the vast majority, that motivation should not be solely monetary gain… at least not directly.

Telling the Difference in Flu Vs. Cold

October 21st, 2009

The excitement over Swine (H1N1) Flu isn’t anywhere near ending. The slow release of vaccine and the steady growth in all types of flu’s, cold’s, and allergies with the Fall season has left many confused and worried.

In the Spring when the first cases were reported out of Mexico, there was a lot of concern from our fitness professionals scheduled to travel to resorts in that part of the world.  With the swine flu now reaching most all areas of the world, the concern has changed to personal prevention and telling the difference between more common seasonal ailments and those produced through this new flu strain.

A quick Google search will provide you a great deal of information.  Following I have included a nice side by side chart found on the FitSugar site, that displays differing symptoms in the flu vs cold.

Shelly Wellness

October 15th, 2009

Michelle (Shelly) Millman – We had a little family bonding time tonight in support of you. Apparently it was a lot of fun for most involved.  Read on and you can walk through a short hour of our evening.

before-after

I’m sorry this transformation couldn’t happen on the “big shave” day (Friday), but joining you from here was the next best option I could muster, and the kids really enjoyed participating.

My challenge with this cut is nowhere near yours, but your public display of courage  in this battle has been inspiring to myself and our entire family. Positive thoughts and many prayers to you….  Shelly says “Get A Mammogram!”

… A few more embarrassing pics to follow.

Marketing Health Challenges

October 6th, 2009

As a fitness professional the marketing of health can prove very challenging. Especially since this entire subject matter is left as an after thought when it comes to certification training as a fitness professional.

Besides seeking out competent mentors and/or appropriate trainings for marketing health & fitness, it is helpful to look at what larger organizations are doing in regards to this type of marketing.

One example is from the British Government.  The “Change for Life” campaign utilizes a well known group of animated t.v. stars to spread the word… The Simpsons.

Client Diet & Nutrition Challenges – Solutions

September 19th, 2009

In 15+ years of participating in and around the fitness industry, the challenge of addressing client nutrition has been an ongoing issue.

Knowing that a client has the ability to unravel a perfectly designed exercise program with only a few poor consumption decisions on their own time has left many a fitness professional frustrated… and I’m sure a few just plain pissed.

Clients as well as the majority of the population love to search out and buy into the latest greatest diet fad creating an often uphill battle with the topic of nutrition.

Because of this, I have for years been on the lookout for a scientifically based, sensible dietary tool that could be used to assist the client without taking myself out of my scope of practice.

That solution has been found, used by us locally, and with a little negotiation I am very happy to be able to provide this same opportunity to other trainers…

Health & Lifestyle – Wellness Coaching

August 20th, 2009

Over the past several years, Wellness Coaching has taken on a more predominant role in the fitness industry.  It is difficult to get through an industry trade journal without running into an ad for one or more “educational opportunities” for becoming a wellness coach.

In working with several thousand fitness professionals from various specialty backgrounds I most often am asked two simple questions.  I want to share those answers with you here.

  1. What is a Wellness Coach – Answer: A proactive advocate for the overall wellness of the client.
  2. What is best training for becoming a Wellness Coach – Answer: Health & Lifestyle Coach Certificate from the National Institute of Whole Health (NIWH).
